Mount Kilimanjaro Londorossi Route

Mount Kilimanjaro Londorossi Route is an unspoilt, remote, less-used, and beautiful way up to the Shira Plateau. Trekkers sometimes use it to ascend the Western Breach route or follow it with the Kibo South Circuit to ascend by the easier Barafu Route. The first day of the route hardly ever has any game animals, and armed rangers never accompany a group.The standard route takes 7 days on the mountain, and is sometimes extended to 8 days with a stay at Karanga Valley.

Day 1 :

Arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) - Transfer to Arusha

Welcome to Tanzania! Upon your arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) you will be met by your driver/guide and transferred to Arusha for overnight. The rest of the day is free, enjoy the accommodations tranquil natural setting as you settle in for your first night in Tanzania. Take a stroll, enjoy the sights and sounds. Get plenty of rest tomorrow will be huge! Dinner and overnight at Maura Apartment.

Day 2 :

Drive from Moshi to Londorossi Gate

Drive from Moshi (915 m) to Londorossi Gate (2,250 m) through Moram via Shira trails to Shira 2 campsite (3878 m). From moram follow a forest track in a 4WD vehicle for 11 km/7 in (45 minutes) to Shira trails and a possible campsite. From Shira trails, walk for 3 hours along beautiful forest trails to Shira 2 campsite. Moshi (915 m) Londorossi Gate (2,250 m) Shira 2 campsite (3878 m). Dinner and overnight at Shira 2 camp site.

Day 3 :

Shira 2 campsite to Moir hut

From Shira 2 campsite to Moir hut proceed with the trail gradually steepens, enters the giant heather moorland zone, then crosses the Shira Ridge up to the Moir campsite the Lover tower (4,200m) Shira 2 campsite (3,878m) LOVER TOWER (4,200 m) Dinner and overnight at Lover Tower Campsite.

Day 4 :

Moir hut to Pofu Camp

Begin the morning trek heading out of the moorland and into the stark alpine desert, on a steep ridge off the main trail, and begin our venture on the Northern Circuit Route. The total trekking time is about 5 – 7 hours. From the Pofu Campsite, you will enjoy a magnificent view of Kenya's wild lands to the north. MOIR hurt ~ POFU CAMP (4,025m) Dinner and overnight at Pofu Campsite.

Day 5 :

Pofu Camp to Third Caves

Proceed onward through valleys and over ridges through the alpine desert and moorland, continuing our circuit to the east, enjoying a vast mountain wilderness to ourselves. Trekking time today is 5 - 7 hours. POFU CAMP ~ THIRD CAVES CAMP (3600m) Dinner and overnight at Third Caves Campsite

Day 6 :

Third Caves Camp to Kibo Camp

Proceed onward through valleys and over ridges onto the alpine desert and moorland, continuing our circuit to the south, Enjoying a vast mountain wilderness to ourselves, The temperatures turn cold as you arrive at the foot of Kibo, trekking time today is 4- 6 hours, Prepare all your gear for the day ahead, and turn in early to rest. A resupply of fresh food and suppliers will reach camp on this afternoon. THIRD CAVES CAMP (3600m) - KIBO CAMP (4,700m) Dinner and overnight at Kibo Campsite.

Day 7 :

Kibo Camp to Uhuru Peak

Millennium/High Camp (3110m) a midnight wake-up call is the start of a long trek. You begin trekking at 1 am up to the winding path of endless switchbacks. From your camp to the rim of the crater (Gillman’s Point (18,750ft. / 5,712 m) to Uhuru Peak, the trekking time is about 7 -8 hours. The slope is steep, with switchbacks, over loose rock and scree with some boulders as you near Gilman’s Point. You will stop at Hans Meyer cave on the way, the famous place where Kilimanjaro first western climber described in his journals. Once you arrive at Gilman’s Point at the edge of the crater, the trail to the summit is less demanding and is reached after a further 1½-2 hours along the snowy crater rim (depending on the season). After a short time at the summit, retrace your steps back to Gilman’s Point, then summon your strength again for a further descent to Millennium Camp for the night. KIBO CAMP (4,700 M) ~ UHURU PEAK (5895M.) Dinner and Overnight Millenium Campsite.

Day 8 :

Mweka Gate - Arusha

Descend straight to the gate (2-3 hours), where you’ll have lunch and will be awarded climbing certificates. Overnight at Springlands hotel or similar. Millennium (3110m) ~ MWEKA GATE (1,830m) Dinner and overnight at Maura Apartment

Day 9 :

Transfer from Arusha to Kilimanjaro International Airport

It’s the final day in mainland Tanzania, depending with the time of your flight departure, be sure to grab any last minute souvenirs you may want and say one last goodbye to the the new friends you made in Tanzania before. Our drive will come to the hotel to pick you up for trip to the Airport to catch a flight back home. Or else a trip to the beaches at Zanzibar is a good way to recuperate. We can also arrange many reasonably priced safaris before Mount Kilimanjaro trek to help with acclimatization. Kwa heri ya kuonana – (Good bye and see you again).

How fit do I need to be to do this trek?

Annapurna Base Camp is a Grade B or a moderately difficult trekking route. So any fit person can do this trek, even if you do not have any previous experience. You should be aware of what to expect and mentally prepare for it. Then, as long as you will too, you can.

How long do we walk every day when doing Annapurna Base Camp trekking?

On average, you walk about 4 to 6 hours per day. One or two days can be as less as 3hrs and one or two days can be as long as 7hrs.

What is the highest altitude reached in this trek?

The highest altitude reached is 4190m. This is the elevation of Annapurna Base Camp. ABC is the highest we will climb in this trek.

What about battery charging and hot shower facilities?

Yes, you can charge batteries en route. Charger should be brought. There are hot shower facilities as well. You may have to pay a certain amount for both ($1-$2). Negotiate. Also, a hot water facility could be free at a lower elevation.

Are there ATMs on the way to Annapurna Base Camp?

No. There are no ATMs on this trek route. You will have to draw enough cash in Pokhara or Kathmandu. There are a number of ATMs in these cities. Everything is paid in Nepali rupees. So money should be exchanged before the start of the trek.

What about internet access?

Yes. The Internet can be accessed in most places. Sometimes, there might be some technical problems. The Internet in Nepal is not as fast as you are used to and at times you can just lose connection.

Is it necessary to hire Guides/trekking agency for Annapurna Base Camp trekking?

Not really. It depends on you. If you want, ABC trekking can be done independently. You could hire a guide and a porter by yourself instead of going through an agency or not hire a guide at all. Although, not having a guide can be a little problematic during the offseason.

It really depends on you. Is it your first time in Nepal? How confident are you of being able to find your way around? How pressed on time are you? If you go through an agency, it will be costlier but everything will be planned. You will only have to come, trek and return.

How much do guides and porters cost?

For the Annapurna region, pay for guides range from $20 to $30 per day and porters take $15 to $25 per day.
